August 29, 2006 - Sony to ship 4 million PS3s by year-end.
Almost every time a new console debuts, there are shortages. Last year's launch of the Xbox 360 is a fantastic example. Preorders went unfulfilled, lines were long, and Xbox 360s were in very short supply. The PlayStation 2 launch was no walk in the park either; in fact, it was quite a miserable experience.
Sony intends for things to be different when the PlayStation 3 is released on November 11 in Japan and November 16 in North America. When Sony announced the launch date and price for its next-generation console, it said that it would ship 4 million consoles by year end and another 2 million by March 31, 2007.
